چکیده

In this paper, a novel variational approach for multi-modal image registration based on consistent non-rigid transforms is proposed. The forward and backward transforms are computed in a variational framework simultaneously. A consistency energy is added into the variational registration framework and an iterative method assures that the forward and backward transforms are close approximate inverses of each other. This new scheme can provide more constraints on the forward and backward transforms and make them smoother. This reduces the chance of being stuck into a local minimum. We can incorporate the consistent transforms together with several kinds of information based similarity metrics such as mutual information and correlation ratio into the registration framework. An implicit finite difference scheme is used to solve the Euler–Lagrange equation numerically. Our proposed method is evaluated by using simulated multi-modal magnetic resonance images (MRI) and real medical images. The results of our proposed consistent registration and those using only forward or backward registration are compared. Improvements at the edge area can be easily seen from the registration results. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

EVolution: an edge-based variational method for non-rigid multi-modal image registration.

Image registration is part of a large variety of medical applications including diagnosis, monitoring disease progression and/or treatment effectiveness and, more recently, therapy guidance. Such applications usually involve several imaging modalities such as ultrasound, computed tomography, positron emission tomography, x-ray or magnetic resonance imaging, either separately or combined. In the...

Learning Based Non-rigid Multi-modal Image Registration Using Kullback-Leibler Divergence

The need for non-rigid multi-modal registration is becoming increasingly common for many clinical applications. To date, however, existing proposed techniques remain as largely academic research effort with very few methods being validated for clinical product use. It has been suggested by Crum et al. that the context-free nature of these methods is one of the main limitations and that moving t...

A Variational Approach to Nonrigid Morphological Image Registration

A variational method to non rigid registration of multi-modal image data is presented. A suitable deformation will be determined via the minimization of a morphological, i.e., contrast invariant, matching functional along with an appropriate regularization energy. The aim is to correlate the morphologies of a template and a reference image under the deformation. Mathematically, the morphology o...

Nonrigid morphological image registration & its practical issues

We present a novel variational method to non rigid registration of multi-modal data. Here we want to give special focus on the practical issues involving scale-space methods, regularization of the corresponding gradient...

Optimized co-registration method of Spinal cord MR Neuroimaging data analysis and application for generating multi-parameter maps

Introduction: The purpose of multimodal and co-registration In MR Neuroimaging is to fuse two or more sets images (T1, T2, fMRI, DTI, pMRI, …) for combining the different information into a composite correlated data set in order to visualization, re-alignment and generating transform to functional Matrix. Multimodal registration and motion correction in spinal cord MR Neuroimag...
